Got offers from both Dubai (AED 35k/month) and Doha (QAR 30k/month). Both are tax-free but I'm trying to figure out which one leaves more in my pocket after rent, food, and lifestyle. Anyone done the comparison?
Dubai is more expensive for housing but has way more lifestyle options. A decent 1BR in a good area (JLT, Marina, Downtown) runs AED 6,000–9,000/month. Groceries are reasonable if you shop at Carrefour/Lulu. The big hidden cost is schooling if you have kids — AED 30,000–80,000/year per child. On AED 35k/month you'll save comfortably if you're a couple without kids.
Doha is cheaper for rent (QAR 4,000–6,000 for a nice 1BR) and groceries are similar. But the social scene is much smaller — Dubai wins hands down for lifestyle. If you're here purely to save money, Qatar edges it. If quality of life matters, Dubai. Also, Qatar's exit permit system was technically abolished but some employers still make it difficult to leave.
Run the numbers in EUR: AED 35k ≈ €8,800/month, QAR 30k ≈ €7,500/month. After rent and basics, you'd save roughly €4,500–5,500/month in Dubai vs €4,000–5,000 in Doha. Pretty close. The real differentiator is career growth — Dubai has a much bigger tech ecosystem.
